The fall collection is always one of my favorites to create because I try to look beyond the usual suspects. Because let’s be real here, there’s no shortage of fall scents. Pumpkin spice, apple pie, cinnamon everything dominates the shelves this time of the year.

There are few things that feel more like fall than a pot of mulled wine simmering on the stove while friends start arriving. For Drinking Season, I wanted to capture that entire experience in a candle. I layered the different notes that make up a great mulled wine, like rich red wine, bright orange peel, a soft floral heart to balance the fruit, and a warm, spicy base that gives the scent its depth and coziness.

This candle smells like the real thing, rather than simply smelling “spicy.” Light it and imagine yourself wandering through a German Christmas market, mulled wine warming your hands as you browse the stalls and do a little last-minute shopping.

Barlett & Bosc

For those who are tired of apple pie

Notes: Pear, Cardamom, and Chestnut.

I feel like apple pie gets over-represented in the candle world. But where’s the pear love? Bartlett & Bosc puts this underrated fall fruit in the spotlight. Juicy, ripe pear brings freshness and sweetness to the scent while warm cardamom and roasted chestnut add the cozy, toasted depth you want from a fall candle. This is the pear version of your favorite fall dessert without smelling like you baked a pie. 

And, of course, there’s a hidden reference behind the name. Bartlett & Bosc is named after an episode of Sex and the City. It wouldn’t be a CarteHaus candle without a pop culture reference somewhere in the mix, right?

I love pumpkin season, but I wanted to reimagine what a pumpkin candle could smell like. Instead of taking pumpkin down the usual dessert route, Pumpkinhead captures the smell of a pumpkin fresh from the patch long before it ever becomes a pie. I’m bringing the green, herbaceous, and earthy scents from the patch and marrying them with the crisp snap of sage and juicy, ripe persimmon to add brightness. 

This is the smell of a sunny fall day with cool air and golden pumpkins waiting to be picked.

Warm spices to heat up the soul

Notes: Cinnamon, Ginger, and Saffron

If you’re looking for the closest thing to a traditional holiday scent in the collection, this is it. Spice Up Your Life is warm, bold and spicy with cinnamon, ginger, and vanilla bringing in the familiar coziness. I wanted to give this classic a bit more depth so I added notes of citrus peel, saffron and black peppercorn. The result is a nostalgic spice scent without being overly sweet. 

It reminds me of hosting a gathering with freshly baked treats, a Moscow Mule in hand and the buzz of good conversation happening all around you.
